Outokumpu Stainless relies on laser technology from Laserplus

In the early autumn, Laserplus delivered a fibre laser marking system to Outokumpu’s steelworks in Tornio. The delivery was a follow-on from the previously delivered automated specimen manufacturing system (ASMS).

By investing in the latest technology, Outokumpu Stainless was seeking new replacement technology for marking specimens in its quality monitoring laboratory, which was previously done by ink-jet. The aim of the procurement was to get the data systems of the marking system up-to-date, and to improve the quality of marking.

When the specimens are tested on automatic lines, identification should be 100%. Through the introduction of fibre laser technology, the quality, permanence and monitoring of the marking of specimens and deep-drawn screens improved significantly, says Sami Kokkonen, Laboratory Manager at Outokumpu.

In corrosion testing in particular, deep laser marking preserves the marking imprint irrespective of the wearing down of the material. The marking imprint can be adjusted up to 3mm, so is reliable even if surface forms are bent or uneven. In addition to a 2D code, the new equipment also marks bitmaps and vector graphics.

The Laserplus fibre laser marking equipment is being delivered for a work area in accordance with the customer’s product. There are no material restrictions in fibre laser marking, and features of the operator-friendly user interface include automatic opening of the protective hood after the marking process has been completed. The most significant benefits of the 20W fibre laser (work area 400x400mm, laser source IPG Photonics) delivered to the Tornio plant are the quality of the beam, the low power requirement, easy carriage of the beam along the fibre, freedom from maintenance, the air-cooling system and the large number of operating hours that the laser source can provide. In addition to low annual maintenance costs, operating costs at the Tornio plant were reduced considerably through savings made by doing away with the solvents and inks continually required for ink-jet marking.

Products delivered to the customer from Outokumpu’s Tornio steelworks are tested according to standards in the material testing laboratory at the company’s research centre in Tornio, so control of the specimens to be tested requires an efficient IT-based solution. Working through a database streamlined this control function and made it much easier, says Kokkonen.

Fast start up: The first factory tests of the marking equipment were performed at the Laserplus premises in Hämeenlinna, and the subsequent tests were done at Outokumpu’s production facility in Tornio. Operator training was carried out in conjunction with production start-up. The new equipment was in full-time production use after just three days of product testing.

Outokumpu is an international stainless steel company with vision to be the undisputed number one in stainless, with success based on operational excellence. Stainless steel is the fastest growing metal market across the world. In this market Outokumpu is also widely recognized as world leaders in technical support, research and development. Outokumpu operates in some 30 countries and employs 8 000 people. In 2007, the Group's sales were EUR 6.9 billion.
